Three region showdowns will play out on Jacobs airwaves

By Morgan Lee Sports Editor
With less than half the season remaining, there are key battles on the slate for area football programs every week. This Friday is no exception, and the Jacobs Media family of radio stations will be here to bring you three intriguing showdowns for Week 7.

After some lopsided victories since beginning play in Region 7-AAA, Buford will travel north to face its toughest league challenge yet at White County in a game broadcast live on WDUN AM 550.

The fourth-ranked Wolves (4-1, 2-0 Region 7-AAA) have won their first two region contests by a combined 124-0 in defeats of Banks County and West Hall. Yet Buford is set to face a White County squad that is tied for first in 7-AAA and is off to one of its best starts in decades.

The showdown should present an intriguing battle for control of the line of scrimmage, as the Warriors (4-1, 2-0) bring their triple-option offense to bear against a Wolves squad that prides itself on its play in the trenches.

White County has had a week to prepare for the contest after taking a bye last week -- a factor that could be a boost for a team that has dealt with injuries to key players early in the season.

Meanwhile, in Region 8-AAAAA, Gainesville continued to hold its position at the top of its new league with last week's 42-23 defeat of a game Cedar Shoals squad. This week, the seventh-ranked Red Elephants (5-1, 4-0 Region 8-AAAAA) will travel for the second straight contest, heading to Conyers to face Salem (2-4, 1-3) in a game broadcast live on 1240 AM ESPN Radio.

Gainesville's spread offense will take on a Seminoles defense that has struggled in its last two games against fellow 8-AAAAA leaders Flowery Branch and Clarke Central, allowing 36 points per game in back-to-back losses.

The Salem offense has also shifted to a spread attack of its own and features plenty of athletes -- though the Seminoles face a Gainesville defense that has excelled since a 32-30 season-opening loss to Class AAAAAA No. 5 West Forsyth.

And, in Region 8-AAAA, Chestatee avoided a letdown with last week's 36-26 defeat of Johnson on the road. This week the War Eagles will look to win their fifth straight contest of the campaign -- which would mark their highest win total since 2007.

Chestatee (4-1, 2-0 Region 8-AAAA) will play host to Walnut Grove (1-4, 0-2) in a contest broadcast live on WDUN FM 102.9.

The Warriors have struggled on offense this season, averaging just 13.8 points per game. They will face a War Eagles defense that has given up points at times but also come up with key stops during Chestatee's impressive four-game win streak -- a span that includes a huge road win at Stephens County.

The trio of contests are not the only big showdowns of the weekend -- a slate that also includes a huge battle in Region 8-AA, as Jefferson travels north to face Rabun County in a match-up of undefeated teams in league play.

Region 8-AAAA will also see a huge showdown between Stephens County and Monroe Area in Monroe, as the Indians look to get back into the title race in 8-AAAA against an undefeated Purple Hurricanes squad.

And, in Region 7-AAAAAA, Mill Creek and North Gwinnett will battle for second place behind Norcross, as the Hawks play host to the ninth-ranked Bulldogs in Hoschton.
