Lawmakers focusing on budget cuts, says Gainesville rep.

GAINESVILLE - Saving money seems to be on the minds of most state legislators. At least, that's the take on the beginning of this year's legislative session from Gainesville Republican lawmaker Doug Collins.

Collins appeared on the Friday edition of WDUN's "Al Gainey & Company," and he said from what he's experienced during the first weeks of the session, the goal appears to be the reduction of government waste.

He said one area where he has notice progress is in the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

"[They're] cross training their employees so that, you know, one person can go into a business instead of having to send five people doing different things," Collins said. "And, then, looking into [programs] and saying 'do we even need to be in this at all'?"

Collins, who is Gov. Nathan Deal's floor leader in the State House, said he is encouraged that a piece of legislation he is sponsoring will get an initial review Monday at 2:00 p.m.

He said he has pushed for three years for consolidation of certain government agencies. Monday, lawmakers will make the first step toward blending two agencies.

"Our State Personnel Agency...a great deal of its functions are going to be eliminated. It's going to be moved under the Department of Administrative Services," said Collins.

Collins estimated that the total savings in that one move will save the state between $800,000 and $1 million.
