Poultry industry helps make dream come true

GAINESVILLE - When the poultry convention comes to Atlanta every year, it definitely has an international flavor. One convention attendee from the Czech Republic told WDUN's Bill & Joel Morning Show that the poultry industry helped him realize a lifelong dream.

Milan Veit grew up under communism, but when communist rule ended in his country in 1989, he was ready to open his own manufacturing plant.

"The first working day [after comminist rule ended] I was going to the office to ask for permission to do my own business," he said.

Viet said he was "too stupid" to know he needed capital to open his own manufacturing plant; he simply assumed he would be successful and he dove head first into designing and manufacturing electronics.

Viet said he started making small electronics, but in three short years he had orders for making what he calls "chick trucks," large vehicles designed to transport day-old chicks from hatcheries.

"They are air conditioned because when you load, for example, 150,000 chicks, [you need a] big, huge vehicle and I am now producing these vehicles," Veit said proudly.

His company also produces poultry scales used by large processors.

He said his equipment is sold throughout the world.

The 2012 International Poultry Convention is the the primary source of funding for the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association, the world's largest poultry organization. The convention is being held at the World Congress Center in Atlanta from January 24-26.
