Level of Lanier rises with recent rainfall

By B.J. Williams
GAINESVILLE - The rain that fell over the weekend and continued Monday is boosting the level of Lake Lanier.

Rain gauges at Lee Gilmer Airport in Gainesville indicated the city had seen close to an inch and a half (1.48 inches) of rainfall between Friday and Sunday.

Climatologists say the precipitation that really counts for Lake Lanier is the rain that falls over the north end of the lake, so that the basin is properly fed.

Monday morning's lake level is 1061.56, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website. That's about nine and a half feet below full pool, but up more than a foot in the last ten days.
