CLEVELAND - Following weeks of speculation and rumors, the Cleveland City Council has made it official by voting to purchase the old Talon manufacturing building.
The council approved the purchase following an executive session at Monday's called meeting.
The property at 19 Campbell Street off South Main Street was originally constructed in 1953, with some additions since then. The building has been vacant since the plant ceased operation in 1999. The property was owned by Community Bank and Trust and the purchase price was listed as $480,000.
In a statement released by the mayor and city council, city leaders said they feel this is a positive step in securing the needed property for city administration and public safety facilities.
The city is currently leasing their city hall and city hall annex buildings.
The council advised that future plans for the newly purchased property include a city hall, police and fire facility, council meeting room and possibly a community room for meetings and events.
There are also plans to create a nature walking trail and create a festival area on the 10.68 acres, according to the release.
The council said that these are big ideas and will take time to accomplish.
