GAINESVILLE - Authorities have confirmed that a 12-year-old student from North Hall Middle School has died as a result of injuries he sustained in a traffic accident on Mt. Vernon Road Wednesday morning.
Hall County Coroner Marion Merck said he received a call from Egleston Children's Hospital in Atlanta just before 10:45 a.m. confirming the death of Gabriel McCollum. The boy had been on life support at Egleston since just after the time of the accident.
The boy's mother and three brothers were injured in the single car accident which occurred around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday about a mile south of North Hall High School. The vehicle left the road and hit a tree.
Hall County Schools spokesman Gordon Higgins said there had been some confusion about Gabriel McCollum's death after NHMS officials sent a letter home with students Wednesday afternoon, stating that the student had succumbed to his injuries. Higgins said that information was given to the school and it turned out to be erroneous.
