GAINESVILLE - The longtime chief deputy and chief spokesman for the Hall County Sheriff's Office plans to run for the top job in the department next year.

Strickland plans to kick off his campaign Tuesday night at the Georgia Mountains Center. Incumbent Steve Cronic, in the last two years of his third four-year term, does not plan to seek re-election.

Strickland plans to to make his formal announcement at a reception at the Georgia Mountains Center Tuesday night.

Strickland is a 28-year veteran of the Hall County Sheriff's Office, who currently serves as the Chief Deputy and is second in command of the department. He began his career in 1983 as a jailer at the Hall County Jail.

Strickland plans to remain at the sheriff's office until closer to the election in 2012 when he says he will take a leave of absence to devote his full attention to the campaign. Candidates begin qualifying for next year's elections in late April.
