Jackson EMC outages down to 71

UNDATED - More than 200,000 customers in north and middle Georgia were reported without power early Tuesday as a result of storms that moved through the state during the night.

Georgia Power spokesman Jeff Wilson said Tuesday morning that 215,000 of the company's electric power customers were without power earlier, and 172,000 were still without electricity at 7 a.m. He says high winds and downed trees are hampering repair crews, and some new power losses are being reported.

Georgia Electric Membership Corporation reports there were nearly 70,000 customers without power. As of mid-afternoon, 71 Jackson EMC customers in northeast Georgia were still without power.

Wilson says 65,000 Georgia Power customers without power are in metro Atlanta, and the Georgia EMC gave its metro Atlanta figure as 28,000.
Wilson says the company can't say when all power will be restored because of continuing gusty winds.

At the height of the storm, the Jackson EMC had 15,000 customers out of power. Many of the outages were the result of trees and limbs on lines, with reports of lines down and a few broken poles. Fifteen circuits were out of service, some for as little as 30 minutes and some for several hours. One circuit out of the Bold Springs substation in Jackson County remains out at this time.
