Cleanup continues in Cleveland

CLEVELAND - The rain stayed away Sunday and that was just what the people of White County needed after torrential rains Saturday caused a major problem near downtown Cleveland.

City and county officials kept a close eye Sunday on a large washed out area in Cleveland which caused two awnings at a drive-in restaurant to collapse.

White County officials say the emergency situation around a large washed out area in front of two businesses on the south side of Cleveland has been downgraded. White County Emergency Management Agency Director David Murphy said, " We are in much better shape now that the water flow has diminished."

Heavy rain between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM Saturday caused the storm drainage pipe to break letting the water gush out and erode the area underneath the parking lot of the Sonic Drive-In Restaurant and a car was located next door. There were workers inside the Sonic at the time the incident began and they were able to get out before the driveway collapsed.

Murphy says there are some safety issues at the location and the public is urged not to come on the property.

From midnight Friday until 2:00 Saturday afternoon just over 5.25 inches of rain fell in Cleveland. Much of that occurred within a two-hour period around noon. In addition to this incident, other areas of the city and White County received minor flooding and numerous trees were blown down Friday night and Saturday.

The National Weather Service place White County under a Flash Flood Warning Saturday afternoon after local emergency officials advised of the heavy rain situation.
