Local offices up for grabs in 6 area counties Tues

By Ken Stanford
UNDATED - Local races are on the ballots in six counties in the immediate Gainesville area Tuesday but most attention will be on the runoff between Nathan Deal and Karen Handel for the Republican gubernatorial nomination.

The two have been slugging it out the past three weeks, since the July 20 primaries, seeking enough momentum to carry them into the November General Election against Democrat Roy Barnes and Libertarian John Monds, most recently in a televised debate in Atlanta Saturday. (See separate story.)

There are several other statewide races on the Republican ballot - for Attorney General, Insurance Commissioner, and Public Service Commissioner. In addition, GOP runoffs are on tap for the 7th and 9th district congressional seats which include parts of northeast Georgia and one state legislative post in the area - House District 47 which includes Barrow, Jackson, Madison, Elbert, Clarke and Oglethorpe counties.

Statewide, the Democrats have only one race in the runoff, the contest for Secretary of State.

Local races in the Gainesville area that will be decided Tuesday are on the ballot in Forsyth, Gwinnett, Hall (where incumbent county commissioner Bobby Banks and former Flowery Branch City Councilman Craig Lutz square off), Banks, Dawson and White counties. (See county-by-county link below for details.)

Early voting ended Friday with nearly 60,000 votes cast statewide... more than 3,000 of them in Hall County - Deal's home base. Hall ranked second in the state in the number of early votes. (See earlier story.)
