Police officers rescue man from burning home

By Corey O'Quinn
LILBURN - Two Gwinnett County Police Officers rescued a disabled man from his burning home in the 4900 block of Stone Mountain Highway near Camp Circle in Lilburn Monday night.

Gwinnett County police and firefighters responded at 7:45 p.m. to a report from an occupant of a house fire. Dispatchers advised responding units that a disabled man was possibly trapped inside the house.

Officers J.A. Bailey and D.J. Mitchem entered the house under smoky conditions and located the man on a sofa about ten feet from the doorway. They were able to carry him out to safety as flames engulfed part of the house.

"The officers were in the right place at the right time," said Gwinnett Fire Captain Tommy Rutledge. "They are truly heroes tonight. The man's family was extremely grateful to the police officers and firefighters," Rutledge said.

The exact cause of the fire is currently under investigation, but weather could have been a factor.

The home is a total loss.
