WNEG-TV in danger of 'going dark'

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
ATHENS - WNEG-TV in Athens, which is owned by the University of Georgia, is in danger of shutting down because of declining revenues, according to the University newspaper, The Red & Black.

The station was started by Roy Gaines, a veteran Stephens County broadcaster, in 1984 and broadcast out of Toccoa as a companion to his WNEG radio. It has continued as a commercial television outlet since being purchased by UGA and its studios moved to Athens.

The Red & Black reports that the station has already exhausted "most of a five-year, $5 million grant" and could be off the air by fall unless income drastically improves.

Dr. E. Culpepper "Cully" Clark, dean of the UGA Grady College of Journalism, "with all the factors, the cash has burned much quicker than we thought."

Some UGA sports programming - and an expected bump in advertising revenues from that - never matrialized for one reason or another.
