GAINESVILLE - No one was injured, but three units at Lanier Terrace Apartments in Gainesville were left unlivable after the building housing them was hit by a pickup Thursday night.
Sgt. Jay Parrish of the Gainesville Police Department says the pickup struck a lower unit causing "major structural damage" to the apartment building.
"The driver of the truck had fled the scene on foot," Sgt. Parrish added. "The driver was apprehended a short time later in a nearby apartment with the assistance of witnesses on scene."
Onesimo Arellano, 24, Gainesville is charged with Failure to Report an Accident with Major Damage. Also arrested was a passenger in his truck, Jamie Arellano, 21, Gainesville. He is charged with Obstruction. Sgt. Parrish said the pair lived in the apartment where they were found.
The Red Cross is assisting the ten people who were displaced by the incident.
As to the reason the truck left the road and hit the house, Sgt. Parrish says officers were told the driver "was learning how to drive and mixed up the brake and gas."
