Foundation scholarship deadline looms

GAINESVILLE - The North Georgia Community Foundation is offering 120 scholarships totaling $195,000 to area high school seniors this year.

The scholarships will be awarded through 25 funds, according to Foundation President Jim Mathis.

"Some of them deal with sports, some of them deal with achievement, some of them [are for] at-risk students," said Mathis.

Mathis noted that this year's scholarship totals amount to a $30,000 increase over scholarships awarded in 2009. And, he pointed out that numerous students have benefited from the scholarship fund, including Foundation board member Holly Gilreath Coleman.

"She received our first scholarship about 20 years ago," said Mathis. "She went to school and came back here and is a practicing physician."

Deadline for applications is April 1, 2010.
