Forsyth pair arrested in deadly October fire

By B.J. Williams
CUMMING - Forsyth County authorities have arrested two people they describe only as "acquaintances" and charged them in the death of Michael Smith of Cumming in October.

Authorities say Jill Smith, 34, of Cumming and Peter Delaney, 37, of Township Circle in Alpharetta, are charged with felony murder and first degree arson after Smith's husband Michael died in a house fire on Kennemore Drive on October 22. Both Jill Smith and Delaney were at the home the night the fire occurred.

Forsyth Fire Capt. Jason Shivers says the investigation has been a joint effort.

"The [Forsyth County] Sheriff's Department has been handling the homicide portion of the investigation [and] fire investigators have been handling the fire investigation side," said Shivers.

Shivers said that authorities cannot release many details because of the pending trial in the case.

Smith is currently being held in the Forsyth County Jail; Delaney was arrested in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and is awaiting extradition to Georgia.
