CLEVELAND - The White County Board of Commissioners has announced two top selections for the position of county manager... and one of them is a former Gainesville assistant city manager.

The commissioners received 24 applications and met with several of the applicants Monday. At a called meeting Wednesday, commissioners announced the selection of Carol Jackson of Cleveland and Tim Merritt of Clermont as the top candidates.

Merritt and Jackson both attended North Georgia College and State University and both have governmental experience. Jackson is former Clerk of Superior Court for White County and former state Senator for the 50th District. She currently operates her own independent consultant business. Merritt served as Assistant Manager for the City of Gainesville from 2000 until 2007. He is currently a real estate agent for Jack Waldrip Real Estate, Gainesville.

The commissioners will make a final decision to fill the position at a called meeting to be held after the state required 14-day waiting period.
