More candidates sign up for city elections

UNDATED - Qualifying for the 2009 November elections continued Tuesday for a number of area municipalities - and more candidates put their names on the dotted line.

It was the second day of qualifying.

Gillsville Mayor Larry Poole and incumbent councilman Roy Turpin have qualified for re-election.

In Buford, city commissioners Chris Burge and Michael Smith and school board members Pat Pirkle and Bruce Fricks have all signed up to run again. They qualified Monday but it was Tuesday before city officials confirmed it.

Once again, Clermont officials said no one had qualified for the races there.

MONDAY QUALIFYING

By mid-afternoon Monday, Gainesville City Clerk Denise Jordan said incumbent David Syfan and Kellie Weeks had both submitted paperwork for qualifying for the Ward 1 seat on the Gainesville Board of Education. Jordan said incumbent Kelvin Simmons also submitted his paperwork for the Ward 4 slot.

Orr also turned in paperwork to qualify for the mayor's seat.

Among those submitting paperwork to qualify for seats on the Braselton Town Council was incumbent Dudley Ray who currently represents District 4. Ray is joined by William Lawrence Greene and Peggy B. Shoppey who are both seeking to represent District 2 on the town council.

The city clerks in Lula and Oakwood said all incumbents have submitted their paperwork for qualifying, but no challengers at this time.

For the City of Oakwood, Ron McFarland and Sam Evans are seeking re-election to their seats on the city council, while Lamar Scroggs has filed paperwork to continue in his position as mayor.

As of 4 p.m. Monday, Clermont officials said no one had submitted paperwork to qualify for the mayor's post, and two city council seats remain up for grabs.
