UGA changes contractor for parking deck

By The Associated Press
ATHENS- The University of Georgia decided to change contractors for an expansion to its football facilities days after a parking deck in Midtown Atlanta built by the same contractor partially collapsed.

Associate Athletic Director Arthur Johnson said Friday that the collapse of four floors of the Centergy garage "played a significant role" in the university's decision.

He said the school hadn't signed a contract with Hardin Construction Co. but had sent the company a letter of intent the Friday before the collapse and that pre-construction work began June 29, the day of the Atlanta collapse. The following week, UGA decided to give the contract to another company, Brasfield & Gorrie.

Barkley Russell, a spokeswoman for Hardin, did not immediately return a call seeking comment Friday afternoon.
