Puppy mill dogs ready for adoption

By B.J. Williams
GAINESVILLE - Some 55 dogs and puppies seized from a Forsyth County puppy mill and turned over to the Hall County Humane Society are now ready to find new homes.

The Humane Society will begin taking applications for the dogs Friday, March 27 at 8:00 a.m. Information on the individual pets will be made available at that time and no earlier. Actual pet adoptions will not begin until Tuesday, March 31.

In addition to the application, potential adopters will be required to make a $50.00 deposit by cash or check. That deposit will be applied to the adoption fee. Complete details on the adoption process are located on the Hall County Humane Society website at www.humanesocietyhallcounty.com. Humane society officials recommend reviewing the information before completing an application.

All of the puppy mill dogs are small, purebred animals. Humane Society Director Rick Aiken said it has been a long, tedious process getting the animals ready for adoption.

"They had been exposed, and some of them had, sarcoptic mange, which is a mite that's fairly easily treated," said Aiken. "It is contagious, so they've had two treatments and we will give them one more at no charge."

In addition, Aiken noted that the dogs all had to be examined by vets, groomed and fed while they were housed at the humane society facilities. Because of the additional care, the cost to adopt these dogs will be $200.00 each.

Aiken also said there is no good way to handle adoptions of this magnitude, although he feels the shelter has devised what he called "the best way."

"The first time they did this in Atlanta, they just let everybody come in, and they had to call the police out," said Aiken. "There were fist fights in the parking lot, there was pushing, there was shoving, people were selling their numbers."
