Area utilities offer reward for theft information

By Dean Dyer, WRWH
CLARKESVILLE - To combat the growing problem of copper and other metal theft Habersham EMC and other utilities in the state are offering rewards that lead to convictions in such cases.

The theft of copper and other metals cost the EMCs in the state $1.1 million last year.

Now, 42 of them have teamed up with Georgia Power and other utilities in the state to offer $500 rewards in hopes of putting dent in the thefts.

Habersham EMC's Terry Ward said consumers are getting hit in the pocketbook by the thefts because, ultimately, they end up having to foot the bill for replacing the stolen metals and repairing the damage caused by the thieves.
