GAINESVILLE - The Hall County School System is mourning the deaths of two employees... one a teacher who died in a traffic accident and the other a para-professional who died during heart surgery.

School system spokesman Gordon Higgins said Maria Elena Cabal, a teacher at Tadmore Elementary School, was returning to her residence in Barrow County when she was killed in a traffic accident Tuesday.

According to Braselton Assistant Police Chief Lou Solis, Cabal lost control of her car on New Cut Road near Highway 53, was ejected from her vehicle and then pinned underneath the car.

"The witnesses actually jumped out of their cars and pushed the car up so it would get off Mrs. Cabal," he said.

Solis said the bystanders held the car up while paramedics treated Cabal. He said she was life flighted to Grady Hospital where she later died.

Higgins said Cabal has been teaching in the system since 2005. She is survived by her husband Hernan Borda, a teacher at West Hall Middle School, and two teenage sons.

Higgins also says Sherman Childers, a para-professiional at Flowery Branch High School, has died as a result of complications suffered during heart surgery. Childers had worked as a para-pro in the Special Education department at the school since 2007. He is survived by his wife Belinda and two children.
