ATLANTA - Four soldiers stationed at Camp Merrill in Dahlonega apparently are prepared to plead guilty for their roles in an undercover drug conspiracy case.
The U.S. Army soldiers were arrested in January after they were caught in an undercover case planned by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The four apparently believed they were to rob a drug stash house, kill an armed guard and sell whatever drugs they confiscated. Andre Champagne, Carlos Lopez, David White and Randy Spivey initially were charged with drug conspiracy and weapons offenses when they were arrested. They each faced minimum prison sentences of 15 years had they been convicted.
Court documents now show that charges against Champagne, Lopez and White will be reduced to unlawfully conspiring to take cocaine by means of violence and fear of injury. Spivey is to plead guilty to to concealing a felony. The new charges should reduce prison sentences for the soldiers.
Federal agents targeted the soldiers through another soldier at Camp Merrill, Sandeo Pablo Dyson. Dyson has entered a guilty plea to arson in a separate case.
