Man found guilty in 1987 death of Laotian refugee

<p>A 60-year-old LaGrange man was found guilty of murder Wednesday and sentenced to life in prison in the 1987 death of a Laotian refugee _ a case that had remained unsolved for 18 years.</p><p>The jury returned a guilty verdict about 11:30 a.m. in the trial of Charles Travis Manley.</p><p>Earlier, the jurors had said they were deadlocked, but the judge told them to continue deliberating.</p><p>Manley will be required to serve at least 30 years, officials said.</p><p>He was charged with killing 19-year-old Vieng Phovixay of Newnan after offering to change her flat tire on Oct. 10, 1987, in Moreland.</p><p>Investigators believe she was taken to Harris County by Manley, raped, killed and tied to a tree using strips of her clothing.</p><p>A hiker found her skeletal remains in November 1989.</p><p>Manley was arrested in 2005. Witnesses had been unable to identify a suspect in a photo lineup in 1989 and 1991, but were able to make an identification in 2005.</p><p>Phovixay's family emigrated from Laos in the late 1970s.</p><p>___</p><p>HASH(0x2e0f7c8)</p>
