Holiday Season? Not For The U. S. Senate

'Tis the holiday season, but guess what: The United States Congress is still in session. The Democrats, led by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, are keeping Congress in session for one reason, and one reason only - to block President Bush from making any recess appointments. The Democrat-controlled House and Senate will not be conducting any business, mind you. One Senator will show up in the upper chamber for a few minutes every day or so to prove they are not "in recess". The Democrats have blocked many Bush appointments during the year simply by not bringing them up for a yes or no vote in the Senate, and now they are going hoe for the holidays except for those who have volunteered to keep Congress "in session." This should not be a surprise, I suppose, for even though they have a majority in both houses, they failed to pass critical budget bills until a few days before Christmas ... and then they voted to approve a $555billion catchall spending bill which contained more than 11,000 "earmarks" - those special items that allocate a few million dollars here and a few million there, and first thing you know, it adds up to real money. So, Congress is staying in session to block anything the president might do. What a start for the new year.

This is Gordon Sawyer and may the wind always be at your back.
