Relief from heat could be on the way

GAINESVILLE - The relentless heat continued with a third straight day with high of 96 in Gainesville 96 high in Gainesville Thursday, but the weekend may bring some relief.

The Weather Channel's John Askins says "(We will still be) hot and sticky under our dome of high pressure but changes are on their way as a cold front slowly sinks across the southeast."

Askins calls for highs on Sunday to be ten degrees cooler than they've been most of the week, but still with little chance of rain.

Thursday was the eighth day out of the last nine that a 90+ high was recorded in Gainesville. And, while we have yet to see any of the triple-digit readings (officially) which have been common in other parts of the country, temperatures this week have been running about 11 degrees higher than average for this time of the year. The highest we've had during the current heat wave was 98 on July 28. That also is the highest so far this summer.
