By by Ken Stanford
UNDATED - Three-dollar-a-gallon gasoline has returned to Gainesville - and on the world market, oil prices rose to a new record high Thursday.

Early Thursday morning, you could find some places in town selling the highest grade for as much as $3.03 a gallon.

Regular is still a few cents shy of the $3 mark.

Meanwhile, oil prices rose Thursday to hit a new record high of $72.49 after weekly data showed a drop in U.S. gasoline stocks, raising worries that refiners don't have an adequate inventory cushion ahead of the peak summer driving season.

Light, sweet crude for May delivery rose to a high of $72.49 a barrel before easing to $72.30 a barrel, up 13 cents in Asian electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The previous record intraday price, set Wednesday, was $72.40 a barrel.
