Qualifying starts Monday for July primaries

GAINESVILLE - It's an election year - and the candidates can start signing on the dotted line and putting down their qualifying fees Monday for a number of Hall County offices.

County elections director Anne Phillips Lea says most local candidates will be required, for the first time this year, to qualify with their respective parties. They are two county commission posts and three county school board seats. In the past, candidates qualified with Lea's office, but in 2002, the Hall County Republican Party assumed the responsibility for qualifying its candidates. Now, this year, Lea says, the Hall County Democratic Party has adopted the same procedure.

Lea says candidates for three posts - district attorney and two Superior Court judgeship - must qualify in Atlanta along with candidates for the Georgia legislature and Congress.

Qualifying will run from 9:00 Monday morning until noon Friday.
