Ribbons going up for Charlie Co.

GAINESVILLE - Workers from the city engineering department began putting up yellow ribbons in downtown Gainesville Tuesday morning in preparation for Charlie Company's return from Iraq Thursday.

The Georgia National Guard unit, which is based in Gainesville, was deployed to the Middle East almost a year ago and spent most of that time in Iraq. It is a part of the guard's 48th Brigade and, in all, about 4,500 members of the 48th were activated.

Charlie Company returned from Iraq last week and has been at Fort Stewart near Savannah since then.

The 150-member unit is expected to roll into Gainesville about 1:30 Thursday afternoon and will be feted to a special ceremony at the Georgia Mountains Center, which will be open to the public.
