GAINESVILLE - Know of a tree in the Gainesville area that might qualify as a champion? Well, the annual search for Hall County's "champion trees" is underway.

The Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce, U.S. Forest Service and the Georgia Forestry Commission are searching for the largest tree of each native species. The contest recognizes the trees, the nominators and their owners.

Recognition will take place during the Arbor Day celebration, which will be held February 16.

Entries are due December 31. Georgia Forestry Commission personnel will measure the trees nominated and will select the current 2006 Champion Tree based on these nominations.
