Smoke detectors do their job

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - Two people escaped unharmed after being awakened by smoke detectors in their Gainesville apartment early Friday.

Battalion Chief Stanley Bonds of the city fire department says the blaze damaged the kitchen and attic of one unit at Ridgecrest Apartments on Roper Hill Road.

Bonds say the fire probably started in the stove and was "probably" caused by an electrical short.

He says had it not been for the working smoke detectors, the outcome of the fire could have been a lot more tragic. As it is, the adult and child who were awakened by the smoke detectors were able to get out of the apartment without being injured.

Lt. Bonds says another apartment fire, at Caswyck Lanier, earlier in the evening, was confined to a clothes dryer.
