Deal: Democrats' House victory 'hard to assess'

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - "Hard to assess at this point." The answer from 9th District Congressman Nathan Deal when asked "what happened?" to throw control of Congress into the hands of the Democrats.

Deal, a Republican, says it wasn't a surprise that some House seats in the northeast were lost but "we lost seats in the Midwest, we lost seats in the Far West. Those were not expected."

Deal said though many of the Democrats who won ran on a "moderate" or "conservative" platform, their leadership's agenda is anything but that. His fear is that once they get into office, they'll fall in line and support that agenda.

Deal said the loyal opposition has, "unfortunately," been put in power with no plan for dealing with the war on terror.

"They are going to have to come forward with some ideas," he said. "They have had the luxury of being able to criticize with no plan." And, he added, "our allies should be very concerned."

As for the future of the Republican Party in Congress, Deal says its highly unlikely that the GOP can recapture a majority during the 2008 elections because of the number of seats it lost Tuesday.

Deal commented during an appearance on the Bill & Joel Morning Show on WDUN NEWS TALK 550, like AccessNorthGa.com, a division of Jacobs Media Corp.
