Buford secures top spot for 6-AA tournament

By From Staff Reports
BUFORD - The last regular season game turned out like so many other games this year for the Buford softball team -- with a win.

The Wolves (20-7, 9-1) beat Decatur 7-1 Tuesday, securing the number-one seed in the Region 6-AA tournament which begins Friday.

Jesse Groves (13-4) had another strong pitching performance, allowing eight hits and one earned run, while striking out eight.

Buford actually trailed 1-0 in the fourth inning, but then finally got the offense going.

A sacrifice fly by freshman Alysha Rudnik tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. The Wolves scored two more in the fifth inning, thanks to an RBI groundout from junior Ashley Razey, as well as a throwing error from Decatur.

Then the flood gates opened in the sixth inning, as Buford put four more runs on the board. Whitney Holman had an RBI double in the inning. Groves followed with a two-run double, and Razey finished off the scoring, knocking in Groves with a single.

Buford will host the number-8 seeded team in the Region 6-AA tournament Friday, with the opponent and game time to be announced.
