Raiders knock off No. 4 Dacula

By By Jeff Hart
MT. AIRY - The Habersham Central football team pulled off the biggest upset in Class AAAA so far in 2006 Friday night, knocking off fourth-ranked Dacula 20-14 at home.

But it wasn't just beating a ranked team that was so important for the Raiders. With the win the Raiders (4-2, 3-0 in Region 8A-AAAA) also took control of the subregion standings.

And Habersham, known for its passing attack behind Bo Hatchett and Tavarres King, instead went with its legs as Matt Roberts and Brandon Eaton both topped the 100-yard mark.

"Our line did a great job creating some holes for those guys to run through," Habersham coach Gene Cathcart said. "It was a total team effort. It was a tremendous win for our program."

Dacula (6-1, 3-1 subregion) scored first and then the Raiders finally got going late in the first half. Robert Renshaw scored on a 4-yard run and Ryan Williams caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Hatchett.

Habersham added two field goals in the second half.

The Raiders face another huge test next week heading to Athens to play Clarke Central, where they are 0-10 all-time against the Gladiators.

"We've never had any luck there but we feel like we can compete against anyone," Cathcart said. "We'll be prepared and hopefully we can come out of there with a win."
