GAINESVILLE - In a somewhat surprising move Thursday, East Hall's Walter Hill decommitted to the Georgia basketball program in favor of playing wide receiver for the Bulldogs football team instead next year.
Hill, who helped led the Vikings to the Class AA state title two years ago, earlier this year committed early to Georgia to play basketball.
East Hall basketball coach Joe Dix said Hill told him Thursday that he wanted to change his plans.
"I was a little shocked because he is such an impact player on the (basketball) court and I still think he would a tremendous college player," Dix said. "But, I think he felt like his best potential as a student-athlete was in football. he's a tremendous athlete and I'm sure he'll do well no matter what he does."
Hill, who is the Vikings starting quarterback this year, was their leading receiver in 2005 with 15 touchdown catches and averaged roughly 30 yards a catch.
Dix said Hill will still be the main weapon for the Vikings once the hardwood season begins.
"I don't think this will affect us as a program at all. I'm sure he'll be ready to go once basketball gets here," he said.
