Fundraiser set for Gainesville-based guard unit now in Iraq

By by Ken Stanford
CUMMING - The Family Readiness Group (FRG) of Charlie Company 1/121 Mechanized Infantry out of Gainesville needs walkers to participate in its Walk to Baghdad fundraiser on October 1. Funds raised during the Walk to Baghdad will support the 130 soldiers from Charlie Company who are currently serving a one-year tour in Iraq as part of the Georgia National Guard's 48th Brigade Combat Team.

All donations are tax deductible, and funds raised during the event will be used for the soldiers of Charlie Company 1/121 and their families. A few of the support programs include soldier care packages, birthday boxes, a welcome home reception, and specialty items for soldiers to deliver to poverty areas around Baghdad.

The Walk to Baghdad in Forsyth County is part of a statewide effort by FRG to log the 6,702 miles that separate Gainesville and Baghdad. The Gainesville Charlie Company FRG seeks teams and individual walkers to participate. There is no minimum amount that participants must raise to walk; however, the Gainesville Charlie Company FRG offers a number of incentives for fundraising, including t-shirts, gift certificates, and electronics equipment.

Walk registration occurs from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at Central Park in North Forsyth County. Walking continues through 4:00 p.m., followed by awards for top fundraisers.

A silent auction, concessions, free health screening, and children's activities will also take place during the walk. A silent auction with items donated by community businesses and individuals will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Current donations include a ham radio, a red children's wagon, car oil changes, a round of golf at a local country club, handmade pottery vases, and signed sports team jerseys/balls. Children can enjoy moonwalks, face painting, and tours of fire trucks and military Hum-vees.

Volunteers and donators can get more information by contacting Gainesville Charlie Company FRG via email to [email protected] or by phone by calling 678-462-7077, and volunteer walkers may request registration forms and other information are available. Those who cannot walk but wish to support the troops through the Walk to Baghdad may also contact the FRG at this email address to volunteer or offer your services. Additional donations are needed and will be welcomed.
