Free parking shuttle in the works at medical center

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - A free shuttle could be available as early as next month on the main campus of Northeast Georgia Medical Center - transporting visitors and patients from parking lots to building entrances.

Lynne Allen, the director of Volunteer Services at the hospital, says the shuttle will utilize an eight-passenger electric golf cart and will operate Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. 'til 4:30 p.m.

Allen hopes to have it running by mid-June, using volunteers as operators.

"Volunteers will make a continuous circuit through the parking area."

She says there's a need for such a service because of the hospital's sprawling campus. Many people, she says, must walk great distances from where they park their cars to get to the main entrance, the outpatient building, the surgery pavilion or other facilities.

"...they tend to park where they can find a place and that is not always nearest where they need to be," Allen said.

Allen says shuttles have been very successful at other hospitals.

Volunteer Services is looking for volunteers to man the shuttles. To volunteer you must be at least 18 years old, have a valid driver's license, and undergo a background check which will include a check of driving history.

To volunteer, call 770-535-3394.
