CUMMING - A Forsyth County teenager died in a wreck early Saturday afternoon.

According to Forsyth County Sheriff's Office Traffic Specialist Cpl. Chris Shelton, Kenneth Lanier Akins, II, was headed west on Shadburn Road in his 1975 Mercury when he lost control and crossed the center line.

His car was struck broadside on the driver's side by a 2003 Ford F-250 pickup truck driven by Darin C. Boyd of Heard Road in Cumming. Akins died at the scene. Boyd was not injured. Both were alone in their vehicles.

The wreck occurred about 2:20 in the 5000 block of Shadburn Road, not far from Atkins' home at 5245 Shadburn Road. Akins was a student at North Forsyth High School.

No charges have been filed in connection with the wreck.

According to Cpl. Shelton, it appears that Akins may have been traveling at an excessive rate of speed which caused him to lose control of his vehicle.
