Budget would give to Buford Dam, take from Amtrak

By by Ken Stanford
WASHINGTON - President Bush's budget proposal includes nearly $6 million for renovations at Buford Dam - but could adversely impact passenger rail service to Gainesville.

The spending plan, sent to Congress earlier this week, includes $5.8 million for the renovation of the powerhouse at the dam on Lake Lanier.

Meanwhile, the president wants to eliminate federal subsidies for Amtrak, which serves Gainesville twice daily, saying the nation needs ``a more rational passenger rail system.''
