TV's reality shows on their last leg?

By by Ken Stanford
A recent Associated Press-TV Guide poll shows most people in this country are losing their appetite for realty shows. I lost mine before I first ever premiered, knowing full well you shouldn't judge a "book" by its cover.

I simply couldn't understand the "survivor" part of Survivor - because obviously there was a TV crew following the contestants around. So, what was to survive? And I'm apparently not the only one. Eighty-two percent of those polled feel the shows are "totally made up" or "mostly distorted."

Survivor's ratings went through the roof, though, and then came the copycats.

But, now, according to the AP-TV Guide poll, most of us have apparently had a bellyful. The poll shows eight in ten of us think there are too many reality shows on TV. Though there are a number of reality shows that have 'survived' over the summer and are back with us, it would appear that the network honchos are getting the message and they are on their way out - only to be replaced, however, by a slew of programs dealing with science fiction and the paranormal - given the success last year of programs such as Lost.

Come to think of it, maybe there's not that much difference in the two concepts.

After all, Lost is a story about --- survivors.
