GBI: Couple who shot robbery suspects not yet in the clear

<p>Although a sheriff has called it an act of self defense, the couple who fatally shot two people they say tried to rob their store have not yet been cleared of wrongdoing, a Georgia Bureau of Investigation official said.</p><p>No conclusions have been made in the ongoing investigation into the shooting deaths of Michael Dewand Hill, 19, and Calvin Dantrell Ballard, 17, said Fred Stephens, special agent in charge of the GBI's Athens office.</p><p>Bobby Doster, who owns Shoat's Grocery & Package store in Oglethorpe County, and his wife, Gloria Turner, say one of the teenagers fired at Doster while trying to rob the store Monday. But they fired back with guns of their own and killed the two.</p><p>Oglethorpe County Sheriff Mike Smith has said the couple acted appropriately because they were defending their lives.</p><p>But on Thursday, Stephens said the investigation into the shooting will probably go on for several more days.</p><p>"GBI special agents from the Athens field office, along with Oglethorpe County investigators, continue to interview witnesses and collect evidence in Monday evening's armed robbery attempt and deaths," Stephens said. "I fully expect investigators will be actively engaged in this matter well into next week. There will be a thorough and complete finding of the facts in this matter before any decisions are made."</p><p>Both Hill and Ballard had criminal records in Clarke County, but neither had ever been charged with robbery or a violent crime.</p><p>___</p><p>HASH(0x2866190)</p>
