Passing grades for Gainesville-Hall schools on End of Course Tests

By by Ken Stanford
ATLANTA - State education officials have released results of End of Course Tests for Georgia's public school students - and all seven high schools in Hall County received a passing grade.

Among the six high schools in the Hall County School System, Flowery Branch, North Hall, and West Hall had passing grades across the board. Chestatee and East Hall fell short in economics, and Johnson came up short in history and algebra.

Gainesville High had a passing grade in each of the eight subjects tested.

The Georgia Department of Education made the results public Thursday.

Some schools produced glowing results, while others demonstrated little success.

In Atlanta, 78 percent of students failed the Algebra One test. In Fayette County, only 15 percent failed the same tests.

Schools in urban areas of Clayton, DeKalb and Cobb counties also struggled. Fewer than half the students at Campbell and Osborne high schools in south Cobb County passed the physical science test, compared with about 95 percent of students at Walton and Pope high schools in north Cobb County.

Statewide, 40 percent of students failed the physical science and algebra tests, while 56 percent failed in economics.

The news was better in English. Seventy-seven percent passed ninth-grade literature and 89 percent passed American literature.

State Schools Superintendent Kathy Cox cautioned that poorly schools should NOT be judged too harshly. She says the tests do NOT count toward final grades and some students might NOT have tried their hardest. The Associated Press contributed to this story.)
