Construction to road leading to Sky Valley could be done by Tuesday evening

DILLARD - State Route 246 in Rabun County south of Sky Valley - closed to traffic last week when part of the road was washed away by floodwaters from the remnants of Hurricane Ivan - has reopened but with a gravel-like surface.

The roaring water destroyed the outside shoulder and most of both lanes of the road and that section will have to be completely rebuilt.

Todd Long, Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) District Engineer Todd Long, says right now, it is like having a 30 foot section of gravel road on a paved state highway.

Spokeswoman Teri Pope says crews will begin the resurfacing phase Tuesday morning and should have it completed by 5:00pm.

Elsewhere in Northeast Georgia, the northbound rest area on I-85 in Franklin County remains closed because of damage caused by a tornado spawned by Ivan.
