Lanier Shore Sweep scheduled Saturday

By by Ken Stanford
BUFORD - The Lake Lanier Association's 16th annual Shore Sweep is scheduled Saturday from 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Volunteers will be at eight locations on the lake in Hall County handing out trash bags to the volunteers. Dumpsters will be available for disposal of collected trash at the same locations, Aqualand Marina, Clarks Bridge Park, Gainesville Marina, Holiday Marina, Lazy Days Marina, Starboard Marina, Sunrise Cove Marina and University Yacht Club.

BFI Waste Systems will provide dumpsters and remove the collected trash and GH Martin Boathouses and Docks will be removing the Styrofoam. Hall County's Resource Recovery Department is providing free disposal of Styrofoam at the county landfill.

In return for a full bag of trash, the volunteers will receive a T-Shirt and an invitation to the volunteer appreciation party. Volunteers will be able to enjoy a free lunch with entertainment and games later that day from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. at Lanier Park Pavilion on Buford Dam Road.

Due to the high lake level, the Lake Lanier Association is suggesting that children and non-swimmers who plan to collect trash from the lake's banks and docks wear Personal Flotation Devices. They also suggest that youth groups pick up trash at marinas and in parks.

During the two 2003 Shore Sweep events, volunteers collected 52 tons of trash and Styrofoam from Lake Lanier. The association encourages volunteers with boats to collect trash from the islands on the lake and remove Styrofoam from coves.
