United Way kick off to again promote volunteerism

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - United Way of Hall County and Hands on Hall are kicking off the 2004 Annual United Way Campaign with the second annual "Hands on Hall Days of Caring."

On Friday, September 10, events will begin at the American Red Cross building on Jesse Jewell Parkway, in Gainesville at 8:00 a.m. A continental breakfast will be served and volunteers can pick up their t-shirts before heading to volunteer work at various non-profits throughout the community.

An additional day of volunteer opportunities will be available on Saturday, September 11. Volunteers on Saturday will meet at the United Way building at 527 Oak Street at 8:00 for breakfast and to receive their t-shirts.

Companies, church groups, families, and individuals are being encouraged to take part in the event.

United Way officials say numerous volunteer projects will be available both days.

They include painting transitional housing for domestic abuse victims, remodeling a basement to make a food pantry, landscaping and mowing a lawn, sewing gowns for hospice patients, assisting children with arts and crafts at Elachee's Snake Day.

To get information on these or other volunteer opportunities available on Days of Caring, please call 770-535-7766 or log on to www.unitedwayhallcounty.org.

The title sponsor for the event is BB&T, which encouraged volunteerism among their employees by giving them paid time off recently to assist the Boys and Girls Clubs with their National Kids Day festivities.

Media sponsors of Hands on Hall Days of Caring are The Times and Jacobs Media Corporation. A.G. Edwards is also a sponsor.

United Way of Hall County is a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve lives by uniting the people, organizations and resources in our community resulting in a stronger, safer and healthier Hall County.
