GHCC chief restates position on Mundy Mill project

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - The President and CEO of the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce (GHCC) re-emphasized her support of a 607-acre multi-use development planned near Oakwood Thursday.

Kit Dunlap told her board of directors the Mundy Mill Road project, which is to include 2,100 housing units, is a "once in a lifetime" opportunity and a chance to "do something" special with the land.

Dunlap also said the issue is about more than just the children the development would bring into the Gainesville School System, which is at the center of the debate over the pros and cons of the proposal.

She emphasized the increase the build-out will bring to the tax digest for both the city and the county.

Earlier this week, the Gainesville Board of Education called for another study of the impact the development will have on the school system. At least two studies have already been conducted, one on behalf of the school system and the other on behalf of the developers, REL Development Inc. They different greatly on the number of students the project is expected to produce.

Dunlap wondered aloud Thursday "why another study?

The school board has proposed collecting an impact fee from REL to help offset set the cost of a new school which the board says would be needed to accomodate the new students would bring into the city, which has been asked to annex the property.

The matter is scheduled to go before the Gainesville City Council for an up-or-down vote September 7.
