Bids being accepted for design of new Hall jail

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - Two weeks after settling on a site for the complex, Hall County officials have moved to the next step in the construction of a new county jail and law enforcement center.

County officials have opened bidding on the architectural and engineering design services for the project. Bids will be received until September 27.

On August 13, county commissioners approved a site on Barber Road off Calvary Church Road as the location of the facility.

The current jail is located on Main Street just south of downtown Gainesville. Commission vice-chairman Steve Gailey said when the commission approved the Barber Road site August 13 that the commission's jail committee looked at other property for the new jail but settled on the Barber Road site because of the money-saving factor. The county already owns the land.

The 1,100-bed detention center will be funded with Special Purpose Local Option Sales tax funds.
