Hulsey falls in first round at Public Links

By By Jeff Hart
MAPLE GROVE, MINNESOTA - Gainesville's Sam Hulsey could not keep the momentum going Wednesday after making the cut in the 79th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship Tuesday at the Rush Creek Golf Club.

Hulsey was beaten by Madalitso Muthiya of Zambia 2-and-1 Wednesday in the first round of the match play portion of the tournament.

Hulsey was 1-up after the second hole but then lost the next three holes to Muthiya to fall 2-down after the first five holes.

Hulsey twice got to within 1-down - at No. 6 and then at No. 13 - following five straight halves with Muthiya.

But Hulsey bogeyed No. 16 to fall 2-down and then Muthiya closed out the match halfing No. 17 for the win.

Will Claxton of Swainesboro won his match Wednesday beating Brett Swedberg of Alexandria, Minnesota 2-and-1 and was the only Georgian left in the quarterfinals.

Luke List of Ringgold, who also made the Round of 64 in the tournament, lost to Charles Soule of Longmont, Colorado 2-up. List had a chance to draw even on the final hole but bogeyed No. 18 as Soule closed out the win.

Danny Green, 47, of Jackson, Tenn., set a USGA and U.S. Amateur Public Links 36-hole stroke play record of 13-under-par 131 Tuesday to win medalist honors.

Green, the 1999 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion and runner-up at the Public Links in 2001, needed 22 holes to beat Martin Catalioto of Ramsey, N.J. Green led the tournament after the 36-hole stroke portion.
