JEFFERSON - Jackson County Commissioner Stacey Britt could soon find himself being investigated by the state for alleged unauthorized use of over 600,000 gallons of water on his farm.
Jackson County Water and Sewerage Authority Chairman J. Warren Walker says a work crew discovered an antique water meter in use on a county waterline last week.
"We called the Sheriff in, who suggested that because he (Britt) is an elected official that the GBI be called in," Walker said.
Walker added he finds the whole ordeal disturbing.
"This is sort of a sad condition. When you've got elected officials that choose to go about business that way."
He added a letter has been drawn up requesting the GBI investigation. The water meter in question is in the possession of the authority and Britt has paid for the water, according to Walker.
Britt is quoted in this week's Jackson Herald as saying of the matter "this is ridiculous. I ain't getting into this mess."
The newspaper goes on to say the county commission and the authority have been at odds over control of the authority for some time.
