Jefferson included in federal home loan assistance

ATLANTA - About $2.3 million in federal home loan assistance is being sent to several Georgia communities - including Jefferson - to create affordable housing.

The money from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta will benefit seven housing projects that will provide 650 units of affordable housing.

Grants range from $60,000 to $500,000. The funds will provide low- and moderate-income housing in the cities of Jefferson, Macon, Calhoun, Chatsworth and Cairo; Clarke and Oglethorpe counties; and 11 rural counties in southeast Georgia.

Jefferson is getting $500,000 to use in the purchase of existing units and the construction of another 200 "affordable housing" units.

The awards announced Tuesday are part of nearly $30 million in Affordable Housing Program grants the bank awarded in 2003.

Since 1990, the FHLBA has contributed more than $242 million to help build more than 45,000 homes and rental units for low- to moderate-income families.
