Federal highway chief gives tips for safe holiday travel

<p>The nation's top highway chief urged travelers on Tuesday to take time to plan out their holiday destination and to make sure their vehicles are as safe as possible.</p><p>Federal Highway Administrator Mary E. Peters came to Atlanta to kickoff a holiday travel campaign that reminds travelers to use state highway information on the Internet in order to avoid congested roads.</p><p>In addition, Peters reminded drivers to make sure their vehicles are in proper working order because crashes and disabled vehicles cause up to a quarter of highway congestion during the holiday season.</p><p>Seat belts also should be used and drivers should make sure to slow down in bad weather or in construction zones.</p><p>Peters said she came to Atlanta to announce the campaign because Georgia's system of providing real-time highway information for travelers is among the best in the nation.</p><p>____</p><p>On the Net:</p><p>HASH(0x28659a0)</p>
